Learn some new techniques: Introducing mixed media, working with oil bar, pigment, creating lines and texture and image transfer. We will emphasize how these techniques can be developed to create a unique encaustic language for each student. We will talk (and demo) how to create glaze layers, as well as some special techniques like inscribing and using dry pigment..and, you will leave with a printout containing all the information you need as well as a list of suppliers. •For people with encaustic experience or significant painting experience in other media, it will be an opportunity to take your work to the next level •Fee $540, which includes most materials except panels. Call for Entries

The Conrad Wilde Gallery in Tucson, AZ is posting a call to artists for entries for their 8th Annual Encaustic Invitational. For submission guidelines go to http://www.conradwildegallery.com/submissions.html

Encaustic Art Institute 2nd Annual 2012 Juried Encaustic Exhibit

The Juried Exhibition opening was very impressive to view and there was a wonderful turn out of patrons and artists. The jurors took careful consideration in picking Best of Show and the Award of Excellence. They said it was very difficult to choose the winners from such a wide range of talent and diverse skills. The winners are: Best of Show - Michelle Schaefer with "Expand" and the Award of Excellence - Holly Wilson with "If I Were". • We were delighted with the exhibition artists that made the trip to be part of the opening or visited during the show; from New York, Arizona, Colorado and Alaska to name a few. Two of the weeks that the exhibit was hanging, EAI was involved in a Studio Tour that included 29 studios/galleries. We combined efforts in advertising throughout Albuquerque and Santa Fe. EAI averaged 30-40 people a day throughout those two weekends. We also had many appointments during non-hours of the gallery. The show was an opportunity to experience and purchase the best encaustic juried art in our area. For those who had never heard of or seen encaustic work, as well as those who were veterans of the medium - the exhibit was inspiring. • We sold five paintings during the exhibition. • We have included a video that was shot of the exhibit from a member/exhibit artist. Susan Delgalvis from Alaska shot this video using her Ipad during morning hours in the gallery, hence some of the skylight shadows are visible on the paintings, but be assured they are not seen during our open hours. Click here to view the video. • Some paintings had already sold, so she has added them to the end of the video. We are very appreciative of her taking the time and filling our need, and her husband Andrew for taking the time to edit it! We also have photos of the exhibit on our Facebook, Blog and Website. • We appreciate all of you who wished to be part of this Exhibit and thank you for your patience and understanding with our learning/expanding growing-curve. Sincerely, Douglas & Adrienne Mehrens Encaustic Art Institute EAINM.com Mehrens@eainm.com

Beginning Encaustic Workshop at the EAI taught by Sherry Ikeda

The Encaustic Art Institute is pleased to offer a
Beginning Encaustic Workshop on April 28th and 29th, from
9 am to 4 pm. The instructor for this workshop is Sherry Ikeda. (Examples of Sherry's encaustic work at right.)

Encaustic is a Greek word meaning "to heat or burn in" (enkaustikos). Heat is used throughout the process, from melting the beeswax and varnish to fusing the layers of wax. Encaustic consists of natural bees wax and dammar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or used pigmented. Pigments may be added to the medium, or purchased colored with traditional artist pigments. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or any tool the artist wishes to create from. Each layer is then reheated to fuse it to the previous layer.

This two-day workshop is open to those who are brand new to the medium, as well as to artists who already have some familiarity and experience working in wax but are looking to refine their technique. Topics covered during this workshop will include: safety, grounds, priming the board, transfers, creating texture and collage and much more. Class size is limited to a maximum of 8 students to allow for individual attention.

Total cost for the two-day workshop is $250.00. The Institute will provide the materials needed for the workshop. The last day to register for this workshop is April 18, 2012. We require a deposit of $125.00 to secure your place, with the balance due two weeks prior to the workshop. You can pay your deposit directly through pay-pal (or by check) by clicking on the link to our website: www.eainm.com

Tsosie shows "Baggage Claim"

“Baggage Claim”“Baggage Claim," an animated sculpture, was initially created for “Mining the Unconscious,”

a Santa Fe exhibition responsive to publication of Carl Jung’s Red Book journal. Baggage categories were drawn from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders

and pop psychology. After being selected as one of the City of Albuquerque’s “In-Sight” temporary public art installations, the sculpture was modified to include a carousel mandala, additional bags, a base to elevate the suitcases to eye level and a place for viewers to suggest additional baggage. The sculpture’s ten bags now include: addiction, anger, anxiety, control, depression, expectation, insecurity, jealousy, phobia and rejection. The artist invites you to suggest other baggage. Fill out a bag tag on the base of the sculpture and drop it into the slot on top of the base.

"Baggage Claim” will be on exhibit at:
The South Broadway Cultural Center
1025 Broadway SE, Albuquerque, NM
March 8 through April 21, 2012
Opening reception:
Thursday, March 8th, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Regular gallery hours:
Tuesday- Saturday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Call for Art

International Encaustic Artists
Call for Art

Come to Boston in the Fall. MassWax is pleased to announce

The Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts
The Future of the Past: Encaustic Art in the 21st Century

October 5 - December 2, 2012
Opening reception October 5, 6-8 pm

A collaboration between MassWax and International Encaustic Artists

The Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) is a high-profile venue with an interesting history. Developed in the 1960's and occupying a city block in Boston's South End, the largest landmark district in the United States, the BCA campus includes Mills Gallery, a premiere contemporary artspace, the Cyclorama, an artist studios building, two performing arts theaters in the Calderwood Pavilion (2004), and a brick plaza where public events and outdoor performances take place. Each year over 200,000 people visit the BCA.

The exhibition will explore the ancient origins of encaustic and its revival during the 20th century as a contextual framework for the contemporary art that is being created with the medium. Our purpose is to explore how modern artists are informed and inspired by encaustic methods and traditions and to spotlight the
current explosion of artistic experimentation in combining encaustic with unusual or unlikely materials such as watermedia, cement, plaster, paper pulp, clay,
plastic and glass. It's going to be a very exciting event.

The exhibition will be juried by a prestigious jury panel: Judith Tannenbaum, Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence RI, Barbara O'Brien, Chief Curator and Director of Exhibitions and Collections, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO, and former Editor-In-Chief, Art New England and Craig Bloodgood, Contemporary Curator, The Art Complex Museum, Duxbury, MA.

Go to www.international-encaustic-artists.org/exhibitions/futureofthepast to enter. We're excited to see your work. Good luck to everyone!

Tsosie in show at Harwood Art Center

Diptych: An Exhibition in Two Parts

Part One: "Encaustic and Silk"
Albuquerque artists Evey Jones and Harriette Tsosie explore the media of encaustic (pigmented wax) and silk in two exhibitions slated for the Harwood Art Center January and February 2012.
The first exhibition, Encaustic and Silk, opens Friday, January 6th, with a reception from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

Jones' work features ink on silk and focuses on themes of change and loss, inspired by the recent death of her mother. The work intimates a larger exhibition scheduled at the art center for April 2013. The attached image is from a series called "The Heart of the House is Gone," and was produced in response to the artist witnessing her mother's aging and eventual death. The winged figures reference that unmarked moment of "crossing over." "Crossing over is what I believe in," says Jones.

Tsosie's work is encaustic on panel. The pieces are predominantly mandalas, which represent wholeness, and some are based on the I-Ching, an ancient Chinese book of divination. Central themes of the I Ching are the balance of opposites and the inevitability of change. "I'm interested in the role of chance in our lives," says Tsosie.

The first exhibition continues through January 26th.

The second exhibition, "Paper and Wax," opens Friday, February 3rd with a reception from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. In this half of the diptych, the artists continue exploring the versatility of their media with a new group of paintings.

The Harwood Art Center is the community outreach program of Escuela del Sol, an independent, non-profit Montessori school founded in 1968.

It is located at 1114 - Seventh Street, Albuquerque, NM 87102-2051. Gallery hours are: Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM and 6:00 - 8:00 PM the first Friday of each month. For more information: 505/242-6367
