SURFACING

September 6 - October 1, 2014

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 6, 3 - 5 PM

Melissa Rubin, Waterhouse 1, 2014, 6” x 6”, Encaustic, ink on wood panel

John Molloy Gallery is pleased to present Surfacing, an exhibition of new mixed-media encaustic paintings by Melissa Rubin, with an opening reception on September 6 from 3 to 5 pm. The show runs through October 1.

The ancient art of encaustic painting, i.e. painting with pigmented wax, has seen a renaissance in the last twenty years. With her work in numerous exhibitions in the last few years, Melissa Rubin has emerged as a leader in this field.

Ms. Rubin is a recent recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Her work has been featured in ARTnews, CBS This Morning, and Encaustic Art Magazine. Her work has recently been in exhibitions at the Museum of the City of New York, the Chashama Gallery in Chelsea, and the Rockaway Artist Alliance, among other venues. For many years, she taught at the Little Red Schoolhouse in Greenwich Village.

This exhibition conveys the artist’s experience of living and working in the post-Hurricane Sandy world of Rockaway Beach, while still reflecting the beauty and light of the urban ocean environment where she lives. Her use of encaustic allows her to add depth and luminosity to the mixed-media process, which invites the viewer to enter a multi-layered world.

A full 38-page catalogue with a forward by Ingrid Dinter will be available in both book and digital format.

Curatorial Statement

This open juried show, entitled “The Devil in the Straight Line,” is inspired by Austrian Friedensreich Hundertwasser, one of the best- known late 20th century artists. This iconoclastic, nature-loving, artist created zany masterpieces of unruly shapes and vibrant color, expressions of a powerful idealism that compelled people to think out of the box.
Hundertwasser’s approach has been described as“Gegen die gerade Linie”, against the straight line. He considered straight lines “the devil’s tools,” associating them with the ills of modern civilization: coldness and sterility of industrial design, detachment from nature, and cruelty of wars fought with machines. Straight lines he thought immoral and atheistic as painting is a religious experience. There are no straight lines in nature.
Encaustic painting lends itself beautifully to Hundertwasser’s ideals. For “The Devil in the Straight Line,” the juror will select work for this exhibition that reflects the beauty of Hundertwasser’s undulating lines and riots of color. Miami is also the perfect setting for dynamic, colorful expression.

EAI RAFFLE

Call for Raffle Items for the

"6th Annual Afternoon Gala and Art Auction"
Sunday Sept. 14th 2-6 pm

Dear Members,

We are gathering raffle/auction items for our yearly Gala event, September 14th. EAI relies heavily on this one event for funds to make all aspects of the Institute grow and function.  The raffle items cost $5 a ticket.  In addition, to the raffle, a Call for Art will soon follow for the auction segment - which will be part silent and live for paintings, as well as bigger ticket items that are being donated.  The beauty of participating is you need not be present to win.  Some of these items are localized and it would mean a visit for you to NM....but some are items that can be shipped to you, or a service you can take advantage of anywhere.

A few samples of what we have so far for raffle items are: gift certificates for encaustic materials, one-year  EAI membership, jewelry, encaustic books, one-day workshops with local members.  The other items we have are gift certificates for NM local things such as dining, spa certificate, B & B weekend in Taos, etc.

In years past we have had members donate items such as a hand-inlaid knife, a week's stay in Mexico at a time-share,  restaurant certificates, un-used coffee maker, un-used dart board and darts, etc.  Use your imagination - you can donate your services, or something of value that you think would be interesting to EAI members and their friends and families.  If you have a certificate laying around you won't be using or a gift you have never used and don't know what to do with - consider it!  Maybe you have a time-share that you can't get to this year, and would like a tax write-off for it!!   We would like to collect all raffle items by August 1st, in order to promote the Gala.

I appreciate you considering anything you might want to donate.  All donations are tax deductible. Any questions or donation ideas, please contact me at:  Mehrens@eainm.com

Please let us know soon.

Sincerely,
Douglas Mehrens

La Vendeenne Award Nominations now being accepted. Nominate now!!!

Nominations for the third annual La Vendéenne Awards are now open.
The International Encaustic Artists (IEA) initiated these awards in order to foster the organization’s mission of providing a global information exchange and raising interest about encaustic in the art world and with the general public. The awards program honors the innovators among us who have created the tools and materials of encaustic art. It recognizes and thanks those whose hard work, ingenuity and excellence have paved the way for the rest of us in the encaustic community.
We invite everyone to think of award nominees who have advanced encaustic technique or materials. Nominate someone whose work and endeavors you respect! Any artist working with encaustic may be nominated and anyone can nominate, whether or not they are an IEA member. An independent panel of judges, curators and museum directors will select the finalists from the nominees submitted. Finalists in each of the four categories, Artistry, Innovation, Education and Media, will be honored at encaustiCon® in Miami, FL Winners will receive a specially designed trophy and a $500 cash award. Nominations will be accepted through June 15, 2014.
