In conjunction with the 3rd annual Passport to the Arts, American Indian Photography and Encaustic Studio will be open to the public with a large display of photo-encaustic artwork and demonstrations throughout Saturday and Sunday. Two encaustic pieces by American artist Angel Wynn will be available for Silent Auction. A chance to own a piece of encaustic art at an exceptional price. 
Wynn embellishes her fine art photographs with the use of encaustic, an ancient art form that uses a mixture of beeswax, resin and color pigments. Combined with contemporary and historic American Indian photographs, Wynn creates an engaging, one-of-a-kind dreamlike collage of imagery. 
On Saturday May 10 and and Sunday May 11, from noon - 3 pm, Wynn will be demonstrating a variety of encaustic techniques at her Canyon Road studio.

The Encaustic Art Institute is presenting a National Juried Encaustic/Wax Exhibition. Artists working in encaustic/wax are encouraged to apply. This Exhibition is a National Exhibition, open to all encaustic/wax artists whether they are a member of the Encaustic Art Institute or not. However, any artist that is a member of the Encaustic Art Institute and resides in Canada or Mexico are eligible to enter. Artists may enter up to 3 images per entry for jury review. Only one (1) piece per artist may be selected for the exhibition.

Juror - Merry Scully
 
We are honored to have Merry Scully as juror. Merry is currently the Head of Curatorial Affairs at the New Mexico Museum of Art. Merry has been a curator for exhibitions of contemporary and historic art, photography and design in locations across the country including the New Mexico Museum of Art, San Francisco Art Institute, and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Previously held positions include curator of the Governor's Gallery for Bill and Barbara Richardson and curator of Special Projects at the New Mexico Museum of Art. Prior to moving to New Mexico she was Director of Exhibitions and Galleries and the Associate Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs Galleries at the San Francisco Art Institute.
Merry has worked as a director in various arts organization including private foundations, commercial galleries and alternative and artists run arts organizations. Prior to graduate school, Merry was the assistant to the artistic director and gallery coordinator for Social and Public Art Resource in Venice, California and an intern in the Media and Performing Arts Department at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Merry's graduate and undergraduate degrees include the study of both studio practice and art history. She received a B.A. at Loyola Marymount University and an M.F.A at University of New Mexico.
Merry's wide range of expertise in gallery and museum artwork, will lend a unique juror's perspective to the diversity in encaustic/wax medium and mixed mediums.

Eligibility
 
Open to all artists 18 years or older, working with or incorporating the encaustic/wax medium into their work, two and three dimensional will be accepted as well as mixed media, as long as encaustic is one of the primary materials. Up to 3 images per entry will be accepted with a maximum size restriction of 36" x 36" for 2d works, and maximum 36 x 24 x 24 inch for 3d. Work must have been completed within the last 24 months. All works in the exhibition must be for sale. Artists will receive 60% of the purchase price with 40% going to the Institute.

  • Deadline for applications to JAS is: August 4th
  • Notification of winners go out August 25th
  • Gallery Exhibition: October 4th - November 2 weekends noon to 5 pm, or by appointment 
  • Opening Gala Reception and Announcement of Awards: October 4th, noon to 5 pm 
Delivery of Art
 
Hand delivered work will be accepted only on September 20 & 21, 2014 between noon and 5 pm. Shipped work must arrive at the Encaustic Art Institute by Friday, Sept. 26, 2014. All work must be properly labeled on the back with: artist name, address, phone and email, title and price. Return shipping labels are not necessary, but are appreciated. Artists are responsible for paying the return shipping of unsold art. Information for gallery labels are to be sent to Sherry Ikeda at:SherryIkeda@yahoo.com. Artists Name, (state, abbreviated NM) title, medium and price (in that order).

Promotion

The Encaustic Art Institute will advertise the exhibition on the EAI website, blog, and EAI Facebook. Promotion will include art periodicals throughout the region, press releases, articles, reviews will be distributed, and a large ad in "THE" magazine, New Mexico's best and widely distribute art magazine. Artists are encouraged to advertise their entries on their websites and networks.

Awards will be given for Best of Show, $300 and Award of Excellence, $150 in addition to special recognition in the Institute media.

Upcoming Beginning Worshop

ENCAUSTIC FOR BEGINNERS This class introduces the student to the basics of working with Encaustic paints. You'll learn how to apply the wax to a panel, build up the layers of wax and paint with colored hot wax. I stress how to safely work with the hot wax and touch on the ways you can imbed things into your piece, create depth, collage, transfer images and incorporate other mediums. All materials are supplied in this introduction to Encaustics class. Next workshop: May 4th from 9:00am – 4:00pm, cost $175.00. All materials and 12 x 12 birch panels included. Call For Art at the EAI

"Wax with Dimension". Opening Saturday May 17th, Noon-5 PM. Encaustic Art Institute, 18 County Road 55 A, Cerrillos, NM 87010, 505-424-6487, www.eainm.com, www.eainm.blogspot.com.

Entries: Encaustic Art Institute members are invited to submit one piece of work. The theme of this show is "Wax with Dimension". This means literally any wax sculpture pieces as well as paintings that have some dimensional quality to it. Below is an example of a painting by Margaret Berry titled "Quench", that shows a 3-dimensional effect in a painting.

In other words, the only restriction is nothing smooth and of 2-dimensional quality. No entry fee required. Entries to be delivered to the Institute's Pyramid Gallery any Saturday or Sunday, noon to 5 PM but no later than Saturday, May 10 noon - 5 PM, no exceptions. Shipped entries must arrive by Saturday May 10th with shipping and insurance paid by the artist. This show will hang from May 17th through June 15th.

Members please note - our policy is to have one piece of art from each member up in the gallery at all times, in between shows. If you would like to submit new work please submit your work given the outlines on our website EAINM.com under Send Us Your Art. If we have not received any new work, we will show the work we have currently. As has been our policy, at any time, if you would like to have your work returned to you, please contact Douglas Mehrens, mehrens@eainm.com or 505-424-6487 to arrange for shipment.

Size and hanging restrictions: All work must be ready to hang with secure wire across the back. No sawtooth hangers. Painting size restriction is no larger than 48" X 48". 3-D work is restricted to 50 lbs for pedestal and 70 lbs for floor display and cannot exceed 5' in any direction.

Label information: Artists should provide the following information along with their entry and in this order: Your name, title of work, medium, dimensions--with height first, price. Download the attached form, (click on the link at left, label is on page 2) print it out, fill it out, and attach securely on the back your painting, or at the bottom of your sculpture. Also E-mail the label information and price to: Kari Gorden: karigorden@ yahoo.com. When shipping artwork, please label your artwork's name on the outside of the box with your name, this helps us to locate your shipping box when returning.

Pricing and sales: All art work must be for sale. The Institute, in accordance with the vote of its members, will retain a 15% commission.
